Technically, the human race is one large civilization that has lasted for thousands of years. Within this “civilization”, there are multiple other, smaller civilizations that have lasted throughout the human race’s life. One of the many civilizations that have existed on earth was the ancient Chinese Civilization. This civilization was extremely successful. It was one of the most advanced civilizations of its time that is known to man. This extraordinary and extremely advanced civilization helped inspire the development of many societies; this culture was very influential. 203). In addition to control the vast land of the ancient Chinese empire, they were broken up into provinces ruled by people loyal to the emperor. Confucianism, a religion based on teachings of Confucius that teach how to live life in a moral way, played a major role in the government. It was used in ruling and also in the civil service system the ancient Chinese had (The Government of Ancient China, AncientMilitary.com). The civil system of China was based on the skills (merit) of a person not on their family’s status and social class (Shabaka et al., pg. 203). This new idea of a person’s skills being more important than social class helped the Chinese people improve their status in society much more easily (Shabaka et al., pg.). Socially, in Chinese society, the people were set up into a hierarchy (Shabaka et al., pg. 202). The emperor was the head and had the most power. Next, there was the state officials, nobles and scholars—the scholars became part of the upper class after the merit system aroused (Shabaka et al., pg. 327). After the nobles there were the merchants then the peasants, soldiers and slaves (Shabaka et al., pg. 202). The Chinese people had separate gender roles for both men and women as well. The men had more power than women and that of as more important (Shabaka et al., pg. 206).
